What IS “trauma-informed care?”

Addressing the role of adversity, oppression, and stigma in caring for our community with Dr. Cassie Yackley

New Hampshire is working to build a system of care for children’s mental health that is youth and family driven, community based, culturally and linguistically competent, and trauma informed. But what does “trauma-informed” mean? SAMHSA describes six core principles of a trauma-informed approach which include: safety, trustworthiness and transparency, peer support, collaboration and mutuality, empowerment, voice and choice, and cultural, historical, and gender issues. These principles are closely interwoven with the values identified in NH’s system of care for children. This live webinar session invites participants to learn how adopting a trauma-informed lens allows us to see how experiences of adversity and stigma can impact a child’s and family’s mental health wellbeing. Participants will learn how to take “trauma-responsive” action in their community by adopting practices aimed at promoting equity, wellness, and post-traumatic growth with people and systems impacted by violence, adversity, and systemic oppression.
