SUMMARY:Champions for Mental Health - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, October 7\, for the 19th annual Champions for Mental Health awards ceremony! \nEach year\, Riverbend Community Mental Health recognizes individuals or organizations in central New Hampshire who advocate for greater access to mental health services; contribute extraordinary time\, talent or treasure to improve the lives of people with mental illness; or publicly give voice to those with mental illness\, helping eliminate the stigma and stereotypes that can surround the disease. \nFor this year’s ceremony\, Riverbend is honoring Dr. Dominic Geffken and Ms. Susan Paschell. \nDr. Dominic Geffken\, MD\, MPH\, is the Program Director of the NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency\, a community-based program at Concord Hospital that trains and educates future family physicians. Dr. Geffken partnered with the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness to start a program that delivers primary care services specifically to the unhoused population in Concord\, which includes clients with mental illness. In addition\, Dr. Geffken was the first family medicine clinician at the Concord Hospital Family Health Center to provide medication treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). \nSusan Paschell helps individuals and groups navigate the legislative system and advance community-focused causes and missions. For more than 40 years\, her work as a lobbyist and legislative specialist includes educating lawmakers on key issues impacting the community mental health system. In concert with her colleagues at The Dupont Group\, Susan works with everyone from top executives to citizens who have never approached a lawmaker\, to educate people on how state government works and how to best advocate for their own or community interests. \nCommunity members\, mental health advocates\, local businesses\, neighbors and friends will gather together at this year’s event ceremony to honor these two talented leaders in clinical practice and public policy.

SUMMARY:The Paradise Paradox: Film Screening & Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:As part of Mental Health Awareness Month\, Riverbend Community Mental Health will host a film screening and panel presentation for “The Paradise Paradox” – a documentary film screening for the first time in New Hampshire. \nThe film chronicles a concerning issue: the community mental health challenges facing many of America’s mountain resort towns. Isolation\, inadequate resources\, substance abuse and social stigmas are all contributing factors. “The Paradise Paradox” takes a closer look at how mental health providers\, outdoor recreation professionals\, and law enforcement are working together to create innovative solutions. Olympic gold medalist – and New Hampshire native – Bode Miller is an executive producer of the film. \nThe film screening will take place on Tuesday\, May 14 at Red River Theatres in Concord. Immediately after\, a community conversation will take place with local experts. \nMembers of the public are invited to view the film and participate in the community conversation following the screening. Tickets can be purchased here.

SUMMARY:Discussions on Diversity and the (Added) Mental Health Impact of COVID
DESCRIPTION:This conversation has been postponed until Fall 2021\n  \nAs a country we strive for diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, yet disparities and discrimination continue to be experienced by many and remain at the top of the news cycle. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic has coincided with an increase in hate crimes among Asian Americans\, rising race relation conflict\, and brought isolation to members of the LGBTQ community. \nPlease join us for a conversation with community leaders moderated by Rabbi Robin Nafshi (Bios below) to explore how we can encourage acceptance and understand. \n  \nThis event is free\, but registration is required \n  \nRabbi Robin Nafshi: Ordained by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2005\, Robin has been the Rabbi at Temple Beth Jacob since July of 2010. Before that\, she served at two synagogues in New Jersey. She also worked as a Hospice Chaplain for a VNA and as the Community Chaplain for a Jewish Healing Center. Currently\, Rabbi Robin is on the Riverbend Board of Directors serving on the Development Committee and The Educated Community Work Group. \nShana Aisenberg: Shana plays various stringed instruments\, specializing in styles from American roots to Eastern-European Klezmer. She performs with Beverly Woods (String Equinox)\, has recorded albums\, written music instruction books\, and teaches music lessons online\, and at workshops and festivals nationwide. Shana is Music Director at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Eastern Slopes in Tamworth NH. \nDeborah Opramolla: Deborah is a court appointed Educational Surrogate Parent who assures that children in foster care experiencing a disability have an appropriate Individual Education Plan. She is a former oncologist who studied medicine at the University of Colorado at Denver. She is also the Co-Chair of the New Hampshire Poor People’s Campaign. \nGrace Kindeke: Grace is the Program Coordinator of the American Friends Service Committee’s New Hampshire program. She is an artist\, activist\, community organizer and a B.A. student of Africana Studies and Sociology at UMASS Boston. She was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and immigrated to the U.S. as a toddler. \n\n\n\nVictoria Chen: Victoria is currently a senior in high school at St. Paul’s School\, where she also lives as a faculty child. She moved from Maryland to Concord five years ago for her 8th grade year\, which she spent at Shaker Road School\, before attending SPS. Although the drastic difference between New Hampshire and Maryland took a while for her to get used to\, Victoria has developed an affection for New Hampshire\, despite some of its flaws. One of her favorite parts of living in Concord is the consistently short line at the local Chipotle. In addition to writing the occasional Letter to the Editor\, she also dances ballet and enjoys studying the Humanities. Victoria is also the daughter of two Chinese immigrants.

SUMMARY:RAISING THE BAR: Mental Health Advocacy in the N.H. Legal System
