SUMMARY:Champions for Mental Health - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, October 7\, for the 19th annual Champions for Mental Health awards ceremony! \nEach year\, Riverbend Community Mental Health recognizes individuals or organizations in central New Hampshire who advocate for greater access to mental health services; contribute extraordinary time\, talent or treasure to improve the lives of people with mental illness; or publicly give voice to those with mental illness\, helping eliminate the stigma and stereotypes that can surround the disease. \nFor this year’s ceremony\, Riverbend is honoring Dr. Dominic Geffken and Ms. Susan Paschell. \nDr. Dominic Geffken\, MD\, MPH\, is the Program Director of the NH Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency\, a community-based program at Concord Hospital that trains and educates future family physicians. Dr. Geffken partnered with the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness to start a program that delivers primary care services specifically to the unhoused population in Concord\, which includes clients with mental illness. In addition\, Dr. Geffken was the first family medicine clinician at the Concord Hospital Family Health Center to provide medication treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). \nSusan Paschell helps individuals and groups navigate the legislative system and advance community-focused causes and missions. For more than 40 years\, her work as a lobbyist and legislative specialist includes educating lawmakers on key issues impacting the community mental health system. In concert with her colleagues at The Dupont Group\, Susan works with everyone from top executives to citizens who have never approached a lawmaker\, to educate people on how state government works and how to best advocate for their own or community interests. \nCommunity members\, mental health advocates\, local businesses\, neighbors and friends will gather together at this year’s event ceremony to honor these two talented leaders in clinical practice and public policy.

SUMMARY:What IS "trauma-informed care?"
DESCRIPTION:Addressing the role of adversity\, oppression\, and stigma in caring for our community with Dr. Cassie Yackley\nNew Hampshire is working to build a system of care for children’s mental health that is youth and family driven\, community based\, culturally and linguistically competent\, and trauma informed. But what does “trauma-informed” mean? SAMHSA describes six core principles of a trauma-informed approach which include: safety\, trustworthiness and transparency\, peer support\, collaboration and mutuality\, empowerment\, voice and choice\, and cultural\, historical\, and gender issues. These principles are closely interwoven with the values identified in NH’s system of care for children. This live webinar session invites participants to learn how adopting a trauma-informed lens allows us to see how experiences of adversity and stigma can impact a child’s and family’s mental health wellbeing. Participants will learn how to take “trauma-responsive” action in their community by adopting practices aimed at promoting equity\, wellness\, and post-traumatic growth with people and systems impacted by violence\, adversity\, and systemic oppression. \nThis event is FREE\, but registration is required \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:RAISING THE BAR: Mental Health Advocacy in the N.H. Legal System
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, states have required law students to answer questions about their mental health treatment before they can practice law. However\, a wave of support has been building to remove questions about mental health from what’s known as the character and fitness reviews of bar applicants. \nIn this discussion\, we will hear from Sofia Hyatt and Victoria Saxe\, two 3L UNH Law School students who successfully advocated to eliminate the mental health questions on the character and fitness portion of the NH Bar Exam. \nIn our conversation\, we will explore their advocacy efforts and the impact these discriminatory questions have on applicants and the diversity of the legal profession. \nThe panel will be moderated by New Futures’ CEO and President\, Michele Merritt and will also feature John Broderick\, Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Sr. Director of External Affairs\, former Chief Justice of the NH Supreme Court\, and outspoken mental health advocate. \nThis event is FREE\, but registration is required.\nRegister Now

DESCRIPTION:Join the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce and Riverbend Community Mental Health\, Inc. for a series of complimentary webinars addressing relevant mental health topics. In this session we’ll discuss common misconceptions and how to spot the subtle warning signs of someone who may be struggling. A portion of this presentation will be reserved for Q&A\, so you can submit questions during the live event. \n You must register in advance via this link to attend the webinar. Questions? Read our Tips for joining a Zoom webinar or reach out to Emily Marsh at emarsh@concordnhchamber.com.

SUMMARY:Documentary: The Welcome
DESCRIPTION:The Welcome offers a fiercely intimate view of life after war: the fear\, anger and isolation of post-traumatic stress that affects vets and family members alike. As we join these vets in a small room for an unusual five day healing retreat\, we witness how the ruins of war can be transformed into the beauty of poetry. Here our perceptions are changed\, our psyches strained and our hearts broken. And at the end\, when this poetry is shared with a large civilian audience\, we begin to understand that all of us are a vital piece of the Welcome as Veterans try to find the way back home. Their examples of unflinching honesty\, courage and love lift us up\, inspiring all of us once again to feel our common humanity\, always the first casualty of war. \nTo learn more about the film\, visit: http://www.thewelcomethemovie.com/ \nThis event is free and open to the public\, but registration is required.
