CONCORD, NH. -- On Wednesday, May 14 Riverbend Community Mental Health is bringing Colby College professor and author Dr. Lyn Mikel Brown to Concord High School to talk about “Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters From Marketers' Schemes.” The event is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Concord High School Auditorium at 7 P.M. Free child care will be offered by the staff of the Parent Child Center.
Mothers, grandmothers, courtesy aunts, teachers, guidance counselors, and adolescent girls will be offered a framework for understanding the social and cultural context of the stress and distress experienced by today’s adolescent girls. Helpful strategies for promoting conversations and helping girls make positive choices will be offered. Dr. Brown’s presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.
Dr. Brown's acclaimed work on girls' social and psychological development has consistently broken new ground and challenged old perceptions. A founding member of the renowned Harvard Project on Women's Psychology and Girls' Development, Dr. Brown has written four acclaimed books on girls' social and psychological development, the most recent is Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters From Marketers' Schemes (St. Martin's Press, 2006). Her others are Raising Their Voices: The Politics of Girls' Anger (Harvard University Press, 1998), Girlfighting: Betrayal and Rejection Among Girls (New York University Press, 2003), and with Carol Gilligan, Meeting at the Crossroads: Women's Psychology and Girls' Development (Harvard University Press, 1992).
The presentation is being offered as a community benefit by Riverbend Community Mental Health, a private, non profit providing comprehensive mental health services for children, adults and families throughout central New Hamphsire.
Pre-registration is requested, but not required. For more information visit www.riverbendcmhc.org or call Mary Lee Carley at (603) 226-7505 ext. 3228.
