Internship: Application Procedures

Doctoral candidates in professional psychology graduate programs (preferably APA-approved clinical or counseling psychology programs) who have met the requirements below may apply for internships.

Candidates must complete Comprehensive Examinations before the application deadline.

The following must be completed by the start of the internship:

  1. A Master’s degree in a mental health field
  2. At least three years of graduate school
  3. All course work
  4. 1,000 total hours of clinical practica, including 500 hours of intervention and assessment
  5. Committee approval of dissertation proposal

Once accepted, Interns must pass a criminal background check as a condition of employment. Some of our placements require that interns be available to work some evening hours; this is discussed in individual placement descriptions.

The following items should be sent to the IPPP Office by November 19th, 2007. We prefer that you include as much as possible in a single packet:

  1. An application form. We use the APPIC Uniform Application Form. You can download a copy from http://www.appic.org
  2. A cover letter that describes your interest in specializing in either adults OR children/adolescents
  3. A curriculum vitae.
  4. Three letters of recommendation. You may have your references put their letters in sealed envelopes, and sign on the seal.
  5. Documentation from the Director of Clinical Training or equivalent at your graduate school affirming your readiness for internship, using the APPIC verification form.
  6. A writing sample (preferably a testing report or a diagnostic work-up; you may also include reprints or brief research papers).
  7. A transcript of all graduate work undertaken.
  8. A stamped, self-addressed post-card for us to send back to you when your file is complete.

Applications will be reviewed by staff for completeness and quality, including prior clinical experience, academic record, recommendations, and written materials. Candidates who are highly ranked on the basis of this review will be contacted to set up interviews with core faculty of the IPPP and meetings with the current interns. We anticipate contacting everyone regarding interviews by 12/15/07. We will be interviewing on Mondays and Fridays in January 2008.

Internship offers will be made in accordance with the computer Matching System developed by the Association of Psychology Post-doctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC), and all APPIC guidelines will be followed. This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant. You can find a copy of all the APPIC Match Policies by visiting their web site: www.appic.org

When offers are made through the Matching System, they represent Riverbend's commitment of a training position. We sometimes cannot guarantee specific clinical placements at that time, although we have an excellent record of matching interns with placements in which they have expressed interest. This year, applicants will be able to use separate match numbers to rank their interests in several of our specific placements in the APPIC match. A description of the four separate “programs” represented in the match is as follows:

  1. Young Child/School-Based/PDD's – This includes work on the multidisciplinary treatment at the Children's Intervention Program, participation on an infant and toddler mental health committee, and placement in the school-based clinic at Pittsfield Elementary School. #141811
  2. Child/Family/School-Based/DBT (* 2 positions) – The second rotation offered will involve a placement at our Children's Intervention Program and at either Merrimack Valley High School or Pittsfield Middle High School. #141812
  3. Integrated Primary Care/Adult – This rotation includes training at the Capital Region Family Health Center in Hillsboro, NH, and membership in the adult treatment team at Twin Rivers Counseling Associates in Franklin, NH. #141813
  4. Integrated Primary Care/Child – This rotation includes a training at Capital Region Family Health Center in Concord, NH, and membership in the child treatment team at Twin Rivers Counseling Associates in Franklin, NH. #141814

The program will be able to consider applicants for a specialization either in work with adults or in work with children/families. Applicants are encouraged to rank one or both of our programs in their select specialization.

Please Note: Doctoral psychologists who are attempting to qualify as practitioners in an area different from their original training areas must be certified by a director of graduate professional psychology training as having participated in an organized program in which the equivalent of pre-internship preparation (i.e. didactic and field experience appropriate to the applied area) has been acquired.
